Phil Interviews Annie
2006 Aug 03
Phil: What do you do within Hobbyhorse?
Annie: I'm the main lead singer and songwriter. I’m also the percussionist and rhythm guitar player.
P: Why do you write songs?
A: Ever since I could write, when I was little, I wrote poems and stories. Ever since I could play the guitar, which was much later, I started writing songs. I started playing the guitar in college because all of my friends played a musical instrument except me. I tried to play Dylan songs, Neil Young and Joni Mitchell songs. When I figured out how to write my own songs, by looking at the chords and seeing how a melody fit in, I immediately started to do that. It wasn’t really satisfying until I wrote my own songs. For the most part, other people’s songs felt like shoes that didn’t fit. I made my own songs fit my voice and playing style.
P: Who are some of your favorite songwriters?
A: Suzanne Vega, Bob Dylan, Donovan, Roger Waters from Pink Floyd.
P: What do these writers have in common?
A: At their best, the sound of their words is just as musical as their melodies.
P: If in 4,000 years, an archeologist dug up one of your CD's, assuming they could play it and understood English, which song would you want it to be?
A: Walking Away, because it is about one of our first stories (in Western culture). The story of Adam and Eve, or Eve and Adam. It is from Eve's point of view.
P: What one word do you use the most?
A: Moon... as a noun and verb.
